Try the calculation with your label
Use values for the exact formula. Inputs stay in this page; no account is required.
This is label arithmetic, not a daily feeding target, a food-quality score or a suitability recommendation. Unknown inputs remain unknown.
Copy the unit before calculating
A number without its unit is not enough. AAFCO's calorie guide explains energy density and calorie labeling; WSAVA provides separate resources on individual calorie needs.
- Write down the exact formula and whether the value is per kilogram, per 100 grams, per can or per cup.
- For a weight-based value, weigh the portion in grams. Do not assume two foods have the same grams per cup.
- If the pack or manufacturer does not provide calorie information, mark it unknown rather than estimating from the ingredient list.
Three worked examples
These invented numbers demonstrate unit conversion. They are not feeding recommendations or measured products.
kcal/kg
A food labeled 3,600 kcal/kg provides 3.6 kcal per gram. A 45 g portion gives 3,600 × 45 ÷ 1,000 = 162 kcal.
kcal/100 g
A food labeled 95 kcal/100 g gives 95 × 80 ÷ 100 = 76 kcal in an 80 g portion.
kcal/can
A can labeled 210 kcal gives 105 kcal for half the can, assuming an even division of its contents.
- For a mixed meal, calculate each known component separately, then add them. If one component is unknown, the full total remains incomplete.
Turn the calculation into a useful record
Our suggested note format is: pet; date; exact food; stated calorie unit; grams served; grams left; calculated intake; unknown items.
- For example: Milo; breakfast; Food A; 3,600 kcal/kg; 45 g served; 5 g left; 144 kcal eaten, if Milo ate all of the missing 40 g.
- If pets share a bowl, the household total does not tell you each pet's intake. Record that uncertainty.
- Bring the record and pack to your veterinary team when planning portions. This calculation does not set a daily target or weight-loss plan.
FAQ
Can I use grams with a kcal/cup value?
Only if you also have a reliable grams-per-cup value for that exact food. Otherwise use the manufacturer's weight-based calorie information.
Are these numbers NutriPet recommendations?
No. The examples and free website calculator convert stated units and measured weights. They do not set an individual pet's feeding target.
